CPAP Travel Tips: How to Fly and Travel Comfortably with Your CPAP Machine
Living with sleep apnea doesn’t mean you need to leave your CPAP therapy behind when you travel. Whether you’re taking a long flight, heading overseas, camping off-grid, or just enjoying a weekend getaway, your CPAP machine should always be part of your packing list. With a little preparation, you can sleep well anywhere.

Preparing to Fly with a CPAP Machine
Before heading to the airport, take a few simple steps to make travelling with your sleep therapy easier. Here’s our pre-flight CPAP checklist:
· Keep a copy of your CPAP prescription in your machine’s travel case. CPAP Machines are medical equipment, and are exempt from your carry-on baggage allowance.
· Bring an extension cord, as outlets in your destination or sleeping area may be hard to reach (even if your machine’s cord is long).
· A plug adapter may be required for use outside North America - make sure to confirm which adapter is needed for your travels. The CPAP machine itself, and its’ universal power supply, automatically adapt to voltages worldwide.
· Review your airline’s policy on medical devices, and
· If you expect to sleep on a longer trip: When booking or selecting a seat, ask if an outlet is available at each seat. If not, the airline may be able to recommend or select a seat for you so you can use your CPAP therapy in-flight.
Going Through Airport Security
Your CPAP machine is considered a medical device and can be carried on in addition to your regular carry-on. At security, you’ll be asked to remove the machine from its case for separate screening, similar to laptops. To keep the machine sanitary during screening, you could wrap it in a clear plastic bag. Accessories like tubing and masks can go through screening in the travel case.
Carrying key documents, like your prescription, can make the process smoother - especially when travelling to regions where CPAP machines are less common.

Packing Smart for Travel
If you travel often, consider a travel-sized CPAP machine —it’s lighter and easier to carry than standard models. No matter which device you travel with, be sure to pack:
· A dedicated CPAP bag with a luggage tag
· Extra mask cushions, tubing, and filters
· CPAP wipes for quick cleaning
· A backup battery or DC converter for times without power
· An extension cord and, if going abroad, the correct plug adapter

⚠️ Important: Lithium batteries cannot go in checked luggage. Always pack them in your carry-on luggage.
Using Your CPAP Machine In-Flight
Most modern CPAP machines work safely in a pressurized cabin. If you aren’t sure, ask us! Store your device under the seat in front of you for protection and easy access. Before boarding, turn off the humidifier, ensure there is no water in the chamber, and switch your device to airplane mode if available.
Travelling Overseas with CPAP
CPAP machines are compatible with most international voltages (100–240V). You’ll just need the right travel adapter for the outlet type at your destination. With the correct plug, your CPAP will function just like it does at home.
Off-Grid Adventures: Taking CPAP Camping or to the Cottage
No power? No problem. Portable CPAP batteries can keep your therapy running for 1–2 nights on a full charge, depending on your pressure settings and humidifier use. Skipping the heated humidifier can extend battery life. Many batteries can also be recharged using car adapters or solar chargers. Some travellers even use marine batteries with the correct adapter kit.
What If There’s No Distilled Water?
While distilled water is always recommended for your humidifier, short-term use of bottled water is fine if distilled isn’t available. You may notice some mineral buildup, which can be cleaned later with a vinegar-water soak once you return home.

Final Thoughts
Your CPAP therapy is essential for your health, and with the right preparation, it doesn’t need to interrupt your travel plans. Always carry your machine with you and pack the necessary accessories to stay comfortable on the go.
Whether you’re flying across the country, relaxing at a lakeside cabin, or exploring another continent, your CPAP can—and should—come along. That way, no matter where you sleep, you’ll wake up rested and ready to enjoy the journey.
